Garmin Forerunner 230 Review

The Garmin Forerunner 230 is an upgrade to the Forerunner 220. The question is, should you upgrade to the 230 and is it really worth it? Well, just to give you a peak into a few elements, this high-tech watch is slightly smaller than its predecessor in thickness and diameter. But at the same time, the display is almost a quarter inch larger than the 220. The screen resolution also has an upgrade making it easier to read.

Design

The Forerunner 230 is made of a highly durable plastic that is super light and waterproof up to 50 meters. What I like a lot about the design is definitely the fact that it comes with a rubber sports strap – perfect for sport because it’s sweat resistant.

The screen resolution is 215 x 180 pixels and uses basic color selection to highlight certain information. However, there is a backlight to enhance night reading and it is fast and legible during the day.

Activity Tracking

The battery life on this watch has up to 16 hours in activity mode, an increase of 6 hours when compared to the 220. If you wear the watch the entire day, this beauty tracks all your steps, and an even better feature is setting daily step count goals. It also gives you move reminders, when you’re sitting for too long. It’s quite a useful feature for runners or if you’re just at home or the office.

The App

Well this is a pleasure and a half. This watch uses the Garmin Connect app, available for iOS and Android. It also has a web element which you can access on connect.garmin.com. With the range of stats you see on this web portal, it’s definitely one of the best on the market. Build custom workouts, design routes and review your data all in one place – what’s not to love? The mobile app on the other hand is much more basic and is designed to show you important elements like data reviews and daily activity stats.

Pros

  • Smaller watch
  • Larger display screen
  • Advanced activity tracking
  • Great web interface

Cons

  • Battery life is still behind competitors
  • The watch is best for runners and not really other sports

Conclusion

In summary, the Garmin Forerunner 230 is a great watch all-round. There are still many features that can be worked on, like increasing the battery life even more and creating a watch that is useful to all types of sportsman, but on the whole, it’s a fantastic product. Easy to use and easy to wear, this watch is surely one of its kind in the market. What sells it the most is definitely the design and app usability. You can track your walking or running cycles simply, quickly and efficiently.
